Today Apple has officially released iOS 4.1 for download. See the iOS 4.1 download links post for direct download links to iPhone 4 4.1, iPhone 3GS 4.1, iPhone 3G 4.1, and iPod touch 3G 4.1. You can jailbreak iOS 4.1 and unlock iOS 4.1, however, there is no jailbreak out for it yet so you’ll just need to wait and follow @QuickPWN on Twitter for updates.

Many Apple users who updated to the latest iOS4 software updated will now need to wait for an iOS4 jailbreak. A jailbreak allows users to add unofficially approved apps to their iPhone or iPod touch or iPad.

iOS4 can be jailbroken, and this was proved in our previous jailbreak iPhone OS 4.0 post.

WWDC 2010 Video Chat: Face Time

At the WWDC 2010 keynote, Steve Jobs introduced the calling feature we now know as Face Time. The feature allows picture in picture video calling and is accomplished with the front facing camera on the iPhone 4 device. The Face Time feature is available only over Wifi in 2010 from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4. According to Jobs, many cellular providers will need to work a bit with that.

Facetime is based on many open standards such as: h.264, AAC, SIP, STUN, TURN, ICE, RTP, SRTP. Apple is planning on going to standards body by tommoro in order to make Face time an open industry standard.

As it is stated by Steve Jobs, even we agree that this IS the biggest leap since the original iPhone. Cannot wait to get my iPhone 4; they come in two colors, white and black. The iPhone 4 will be going on sale starting June 24- that is when preorders will be taken. AT&T will price the iPhone 4 phone with contract for $199,16 gb and $299, 32 gb.

CanSecWest Show: iPhone, Safari, IE8, & Firefox hacked

The annual Pwn2Own contest held at the CanSecWest security show revealed that researchers could hack a non-jailbroken iPhone, as well as Safari on Snow Leopard; and also IE 8 and Firefox running on Windows 7. Peter Vreugdenhil, a security researcher from Netherlands used his exploit to bypass security features in IE8 which earned him $10,000. Vreugdenhill exploited two vulnerabilities in a four-part attack involving bypassing ASLR, Address Space layout Randomization and evading DEP, Data Execution Prevention.

The security analyst at Independent Security Evaluators, Charlie Miller hacked Safari on the MacBook Pro with no physical access to the machine; winning himself $10,000. In the previous year, Miller won $5,000 exploiting a hole in Safari; and in 2008 he hacked a MacBook Air. While there is not much known of the exploit as Miller declined to comment, he stated that the target computer was compromised through visiting a Web site hosting the malicious code.

Another participant, Nils; head of research at MWR InfoSecurity targeted Firefox on 64-bit Windows 7 also earning himself $10,000. Nils also won $15,000 last year in reference to exploits demonstrated by him in IE 8, Safari, and Firefox. He exploited memory corruption vulnerability and used bypass ASLR and DEP demonstrating weakness in Mozilla’s presentation. He stated that it took him almost no time to write the exploit, but “I could have started any process.” Nils said.

Ralph Phillip Weinmann of Luxembourg and Vincenzo lozzo of Germany both hacked the iPhone. They will be sharing their $15,000 prize. According to TippingPoint’s Zero Day Initiative, Lozzo was delayed en route to the contest, therefore his colleague Thomas Dullein aka Harry Flake served as his proxy. Lozzo and Weinmann had written an exploit in two weeks that stole the contents of the SMS database on an iPhone. This was accomplished through using a Web site hosting exploit code, Weinmann said that “The payload executes and uploads the local SMS database of the phone to the server we control”. This exploit was written in order to bypass the digital code signatures used on the iPhone to prove the code in memory is actually from Apple. According to Weinmann, the exploit looked for chunks in Apple’s code that could be pieced together to accomplish the attack.

iPhone is the most popular phone in the US

A report released by Nielsen Wire shows that 4.0% of all subscribers in the US are iPhone 3G users. This makes the iPhone the most popular smartphone in the US. RIM’s BlackBerry is the second most popular phone and has 0.3% less subscribers than the iPhone.

It does surprise us that the iPhone has more subscribers than BlackBerry, considering that the iPhone is only available on AT&T while the BlackBerry phones in this list are available on multiple carriers. To be fair, if you look at the above chart you can see that Nielsen Wire ranked the BlackBerry 9530 series and BlackBerry 8100 series separately otherwise all the BlackBerry series combined beat the iPhone by 2.3%.

Apple currently has an exclusivity agreement with AT&T, which means they are not allowed to let other carriers offer the iPhone on their network. The exclusivity agreement is excepted to end some time in 2010. Once the exclusivity agreement ends, Apple can either renew it or start offering the iPhone on other carriers. There are many rumors that the iPhone is coming to Verizon, and if this does happen then the iPhone will easily become the best selling phone in the US.

New Verizon iPhone next year, says OTR Global

OTR Global recently sent a report to AppleInsider claiming that Apple plans to release a new iPhone late next year which will support Verizon Wireless and many other major mobile networks which it doesn’t currently support. The new iPhone is reported to have a new chip produced by Qualcomm and is compatible with the UMTS/CMDA network.

According to OTR’s sources, the new iPhone will also have a smaller screen size than the current iPhone. The current iPhone is 3.5″ and the newer one is reported to have a smaller 2.8″ screen. With a screen this small, it seems appropriate for Apple to name this iPhone the iPhone nano. I wouldn’t switch to Verizon if the new iPhone’s screen is smaller as OTR Global said it is, would you?

If the iPhone ever does come on Verizon it will definitely be an even bigger success. Verizon is one of the most popular carriers in the US, and they are also the most reliable. Verizon has a lot of faith in their recently released “iPhone killer”, the Droid. After seeing Verizon’s Droid Does commercial, I can’t help but feel skeptical of the iPhone ever being supported on Verizon. Do you think that this will ever become a reality? If it does, and the screen size of the Verizon iPhone is still the same I would definitely cancel my contract with AT&T and switch to Verizon, regardless of the cost. AT&T is not really reliable in my area.

China gets the iPhone, but without WiFi

Today the iPhone was finally released to China (officially) through China Unicom LTD. Prices range from 4,999 yuan ($730) to to 6,999 yuan ($1,025) for the higher end iPhone 3GS 32GB without contract. Unfortunately none of these iPhones have WiFi support, and people in China can already buy an iPhone 3GS with WiFi for less from the black market.

The iPhone’s in China don’t have WiFi because the government’s regulations temporarily banned it in favor of another system. The ban was lifted in May, after manufacturing of the new iPhone’s had begun. China Unicom hopes to bring WiFi to the iPhone by the end of the year.

Do you think China Unicom’s iPhones will sell well? Considering the lack of WiFi, high prices, and the fact that people in China have access to better iPhone’s with WiFi through the black market, I am feeling skeptical.

7 ways to keep your iPhone or iPod touch safe

1. Set an alpha-numeric passcode

By default, anyone can simply turn on your iPhone or iPod touch and access any application that you have installed. You can go to Settings -> Password -> Passcode Lock and set a 4 digit password to prevent that from happening. For stronger security I recommend that you use a password with letters, numbers, and symbols (alpha-numeric).

Here are the steps to enable an alpha-numeric password:

1. Go to http://www.iphoneos3.com/secure on your iPhone or iPod touch and click on the download link to download the configuration file.
2. Click Install button, and then click the Install Now button to install the Profile.
3. Once the Profile is installed you can set your password and confirm it.

2. Turn on the trusty Erase Data feature

After you’ve set your passcode, go to Settings -> Password -> Passcode Lock and switch the Erase Data slider to ON. With the Erase Data feature, all of the data on your iPhone or iPod touch will be deleted immediately after 10 unsuccessful login attempts. You should also go to Settings -> General and set the Auto-Lock time to 1 Minute so your device automatically locks after a minute of inactivity.

3. Use Find My iPhone and Remote Wipe

Apple has a service called Find My iPhone and Remote Wipe for MobileMe users. With Find My iPhone you can track the exact location of your iPhone if you lost it or if someone stole it. You can also send a message to your iPhone asking whoever finds it to return it to you. With the Remote Wipe feature you can remotely delete your Addresses, phone numbers, emails, and photos. It costs $99/year to be a MobileMe user. You can find out more about MobileMe at http://www.apple.com/mobileme.

4. Enable the anti-phishing feature for Safari

Phishing websites are basically websites or links you visit that are disguised as other sites and steal your login information. Safari has a built-in feature that automatically detects and warns you if you are visiting a phishing website. You can go to Settings -> General -> Safari to turn it on. In my tests Safari was able to detect every phishing link, but you shouldn’t just rely on Safari. When in doubt, just type in the URL of the website you want to go to instead of clicking on a link that you suspect goes to a phising website.

5. Clear your history, cache, and cookies

Some websites keep you logged in unless you log out yourself. You should clear your history, cache, and cookies after viewing websites where you are required to enter in important information like your web mail account or credit card number. To do this, go to Settings -> General – > Safari.

6. Only use secure WiFi networks

If you use WiFi , you should only stick to trusted WiFi networks that have encrypted connections.

7. Stay updated with the most current firmware

Keep your iPhone or iPod touch up to date with the latest iPhone OS firmware so that your device is not vulnerable to any exploits in older firmwares. iTunes automatically checks for updates when you sync your device.

Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 firmware with Pwnage Tool 3.1.4

The Dev Team released verison 3.1.4 of their own jailbreaking software called PwnageTool. With PwnageTool, you can create a custom jailbroken IPSW file and restore it through iTunes. You can already easily jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 using blackra1n for Windows/Mac, but Pwnage Tool is required for iPhone users that want to keep their iPhone unlock. Apple has updated the modem firmware/baseband and the latest one fixes the iPhone unlock exploit. Downgrading is not possible, so iPhone users must update to iPhone 3.1.2 firmware by creating a custom firmware file and then restoring it through iTunes. PwnageTool works with the iPod touch as well. PwnageTool is only available for Mac.

WARNING

PwnageTool is compatible with all iPhones and the iPod touch first generation and only iPod touch 2nd generation devices that were already jailbroken before. If you have an iPod touch 3rd generation, you cannot use PwnageTool.
If you recently purchased an iPhone 3GS, the jailbreak may or may not work. I recommend you try blackra1n (1-click jailbreak) to see if you can jailbreak.

1. Connect your iPhone or iPod Touch to your PC and then open the PwnageTool application. If you don’t have iTunes then go to this link and download iTunes.

2. Select your device by clicking on it and then click the white arrow to continue.

3. PwnageTool will now attempt to find the IPSW file for your iPhone. If you haven’t downloaded it already, then download it now from here:

(Right-click and save to your PC. Do not use Safari to download this because Safari will download this as a .zip file)

4. Once PwnageTool has found your IPSW file it will show it on the screen. Click it and click the arrow to continue.

5. PwnageTool will ask you the following: “We will now create an .ipsw file that you can use to restore your iPhone 3G(S) with iTunes. This file will be placed on your desktop. Do you want to continue?” Just click on the Yes button.

6. PwnageTool will now show this message if you have an iPhone 3GS: “Do you have an iPhone 3G(S) contract that would normally activate through iTunes?” If you are using an unlocked iPhone, then click on the No button to continue. If you click Yes, then PwnageTool will create an IPSW with an updated baseband which will not be able to unlock your iPhone 3GS device on the current 05.11.07 modem firmware (baseband).

7. PwnageTool will now start the Building IPSW process. It will also ask you to enter in your password in the middle of it, just enter in the username and password for your Mac and click OK.

8. Once the Building IPSW process is complete, PwnageTool will show the following message: “Has your iPhone 3G(S) been Pwned before (does it have the pineapple logo)? If you are unsure click No.” Just click on No.

9. PwnageTool will now put your device in to recovery mode so you can restore the custom IPSW file to your device.

10. Once your device is in recovery mode, open iTunes and press option on your keyboard and at the same time click on Restore in iTunes. Select the IPSW file that has the name Custom_Restore.ipsw in it and click Choose.

11. iTunes will now restore the custom firmware to your device. Once it’s restored, you can open your device and see the Cydia and Icy app on there. That’s all there is to it!

Geohot recently released his new jailbreaking software called blackra1n. blackra1n allows you to jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 or iPod touch with just a click of a button. Follow the guide below to learn how to use blackra1n and jailbreak your device.

WARNING

If you want to keep your software unlock on the iPhone, you should not use blackra1n. You will need to use PwnageTool instead, which preserves your baseband and helps you update without loosing your unlock.
blackra1n is supported on all iPhones, and iPod touches running on iPhone OS 3.1.2 firmware except for the iPod touch 3rd generation 8 GB (model MC). What that means is that if you brought an iPod touch after September 9 and the Model # on the back has “MC“, you cannot jailbreak it with blackra1n. If you try to do that, then you will need to restore your iPod touch! Update: The latest blackra1n supports all devices, the newer iPod touch and iPhone 3GS will be tethered, meaning you will need to connect your device to your computer and run blackra1n again every time you reboot.

blackra1n Tutorial

1. Connect your iPhone or iPod touch to your computer and open the blackra1n application.

2. Click the make it ra1n button.

3. blackra1n will now put your iPhone or iPod Touch in to recovery mode and display the above image of Geohot. While in recovery mode, blackra1n will jailbreak your device.

4. Once blackra1n is done jailbreaking, your iPhone or iPod Touch will reboot and you should see the blackra1n icon on your iPhone or iPod touch screen.

5. Tap the blackra1n icon to open it. You have the option of installing either Cydia, Icy, or Rock. Select the applications you would like to install and then click the Install button to install them.

6. Once you’ve installed the applications, restart your iPhone or iPod touch. To do that, just hold down the top button until the Slide to power off message appears. Slide the button, and wait for your device to turn off. Turn on your device and you should now see the applications you selected on your iPhone or iPod Touch.
