iPhone 4G Problems: iPhone 4 Reception Issues, iPhone 4 Activation, and iPhone OS 4
The iPhone 4G is Apple’s latest product, which launched today. Unfortunately it has problems which need to be fixed. Here is a list of the problems:
- iPhone 4G Reception Issues – When holding the iPhone 4 in a certain position, it seems like the signal goes down. Some claim it’s a hardware issue, while others think it’s a software issue.
- iPhone 4 Activation – Some iPhone users report getting an error message on iTunes when trying to activate iPhone 4. This can be fixed by either restarting iTunes or restarting your computer.
- iPhone 4G OS4 Privacy issues - Now this one may not even be true at all, but Gizmodo and other tech blogs talked about it. Some employee named “Alpha” claims that Apple sends OTA updates to check if iPhone users are using a carrier other than AT&T in the US, if that’s the case then the phone is locked until the customer updates OTA and uses AT&T. Read about it here.
These problems must be addressed by Apple. If you are an iPhone 4G user experiencing any other problems not listed here, let us know in the comments!

hi! all.

i get some problem with signal (lost signal) after update iOS4 one day. and need to restart phone.
and multytask is the same before because when the program that hold on is not run…. such as Yahoo….
so i think iOS4 is the same like 3.1.3
I just got my iPhone4 to replace my iPhone G phone. I have noticed a serious problem with the bars. I am not moving my phone. It will go from one 5 bars to no bars. Why? Is there a problem with the phone?
Why is there a problem with the antenna? I’m holding still. It goes from 5 bars to 0 bars!
From what I’ve heard its the upper left hand side of the side of the phone that, when touched, kills the signal. The antenna is the metal side of the phone.
Taking picture using camera does comes as green in color and pressing home button to go to search doesn’t work properly.
I had reported earlier about losing the bars for 3G. What I did note, if I was down loading or using an application, that is when the bars would drop. It has nothing to do with the position and the way I am holding the phone.
My iphone 4 has been perfect. No reception issues–I even have reception in my house which I didn’t with my first gen phone. activation was seemless–it took about an hour or so for it to activate but it was easy. I don’t have discoloring or signal strength issues or dropped calls–even in areas I have had them in the past. I am more than pleased.
OS4 on my iphone 3g is terrible. Email crashes, it freezes constantly, my battery dies after 4 hours of use. My contacts were lost during the update as well. Thanks APPLE!
WM you must’ve done something wrong cause my 3G works great with the 4.0 update instead of blowing off Apple look at the mistakes you probably did.
What is this attitude with some Apple Fanboys? I have had my iPhone for a year and as soon as it goes wrong its all your fault not Apples fault or the software upgrade wan’t written to cover most situations.
I waited a week to upgrade to make sure any bugs were ironed out. Asked a half dozen iPhone users before upgrading and they all said no problems. Upgraded over the weekend and had trouble with intermittant connection to my existing mail servers, patchy internet connection speeds and reduced call signal and then on Monday they all said “oh yeah I have a bit of a problem with this or that too”. Wouldn’t admit it before but once you have the problem “oh yeah there is that”. Or you get the glib rollback answer. That doesn’t fix the problem just acknowledges the SW release doesn’t work. My favourite is integration with your home Outlook. One of the main reasons I bought the iphone is this and after trying 2 versions of Outlook I still have bizarre anniversary/adress maping issues.
We bag Microsoft for doing a shoddy job so at least be consistant and praise good work where it happens and criticise poor work where it happens rather than just pretend its a 100% perfect Apple world!

Hiram
Dawn, during the upgrade process, it backs up your old phone settings and this includes your contacts. If it didn’t, you should still be able to get them back easily enough by synching with Outlook Express.
Must say i haven’t had any email crashes nor freezing. Too early to say if the battery is affected. Hope you get sorted soon.
Cheers,
Rob
I would have to say that I too have been facing problems since I’ve I upgraded my 3G iPhone to the 4.0 OS. Loading and using apps is now a very slow – torturing – process. Using Safari is a slow and hectic adventure that, more than often, ends with my needing to press the ‘home’ button to close Safari after it freezes. The slowness is not just witnessed when using 3rd Party APPs but when using iPhone core functionality such as searching the Contacts, dialing a number, searching my phone, and so on.
I WISH I DID NOT UPGRADE MY iPHONE 3G to 4.0 OS.
My screen (on my new Iphone 4G 32g) remains black after I finish a phone call, not allowing me to “end the call”…. Anyone else?
It’s were ur putiing ur finger there is a sensor at bottom
next to where u plug in. U put ur finger on it and it phone thinks it’s still next to ur face.
Well, the OS4 upgrade stuffed up 12 years worth of recurring appointments in Outlook, by firstly removing the end date of every recurring appointment I had, so all showed, and then when I back synced from my iphone 3G, removing all the recurrences, just leaving the first of every recurring appointment. A nightmare to fix. Thanks Apple.
iPhone 4g 3G data service stopped working in my office. Iphone3g worked well. Even though the signal shows 5 bars, all apps related to data don,t work. 4g has a reception problem in addition to holding it using left hand.
I’m having some reception issues but unless you sit there an look at the bars nothing noticeable calls are flawless and I’m not droppin in areas where I was dropping before. Only major issue for me is the fact that I get no sound on video recordings. Went to apple store and its a known issue on certain batches. They ordered me a new phone and I just need to wait for it to come in. No FaceTime or videos for me unless I use the microphone on the headphones. No biggie and apple didn’t hesitate to fix the issue
guys i want to ask how abt if u put ur iphone4g in ur pocket will it cause any problms.
4gPhone dropped out of my pocket getting in my car, not 3ft from the ground and the screen cracked in half. Dropped my other phones never had a problem. Of course I am careful, but I can’t be walking around like I have an egg, and stuff happens. Happened to someone else to. Maybe not as durable as the other iphones.
I’ve noticed in the history you can see when you have facetime’d someone or when you have called their mobile, etc. If you try to then use the history to call back a “facetime” entry the person you are trying to facetime’s phone never rings. I end up having to call their “mobile” history entry then once the call is connected press the facetime button.
I only figured this out since my wife and I both have iphone 4′s and we’ve been testing it out at home quite a bit…otherwise…one would just thing your buddy is never around when you want to facetime!
This issue concerns me as this means there appears to be a lot more going on to connect two user’s via facetime than should be…when the other end does rings it is always MANY rings after my phone thinks it has rang. Just perpetuates the privacy concern for me.
The audio quality while talking sounds like talking through a tin can. Definitely not as warm as the 3GS. Is this related to connectivity?
Reception issue, drops signal few times in one day
I had this problem too on my 3gs. Just do a backup and restore and it fixed it. But for the meantime when you end a call press sleep/wake twice then home. Screen should come back up. Lol.
I forgot to Mention I think it’s a ios4 bug as that’s what I am running. Does multitasking work or you guys. It doesn’t pause state my apps. Just starts them when I click on them.
CAfowler, I have the same problem, during calls my screen stays black and the can’t check my status
The reception is horrible no matter where you hold it. My iphone 3g got reception everywhere and the 4g gets none. When my husband stands next to me with his 3gs he has 5 bars where i have none. Help!
After updating to 4 OS I noticed that my email will say I have new emails to read but when going to my inbox the new email doesn’t show up. I had to go into the mail settings, turn the mail account on and off, and then the new email would appear in my inbox. This happened when I updated my 3GS software and now with my iPhone 4
I am having terrible reception from the iPhone 4G. My 3Gs never had as many dropped calls or poor reception as the 4 does. Also noticed that sometimes the screen doesn’t go into standby while on a call and pressed against my ear, have hit the mute button several times with my cheek while talking……..very annoying! I love what the phone offers, but it’s just to quirky with the reception. I’m very disappointed!!!!!!!!!
I have the iPhone 3GS and updated to the new iOS4. They system seems to run faster then the older version but now I’m having a lot of issues with reception going from full bars in 3g to none to searching to a blue circle???? Anyone else experiencing this? Sometime restarting restores the 3g network then it goes back to its looking for service.
had an issue with losing my 3g data on new iphone 4 called customer service they told me to restore phone as new phone not as a backup and it works perfect no reception issues yet
