Geohot has decided to release his blacksn0w iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS unlock software today instead of November 4. It can be installed directly through blackra1n RC3. In this page I will show you how you can get blacksn0w on your iPhone.
WARNING
- Apple can permanently patch the blacksn0w exploit in their next firmware update, please subscribe to our free newsletter and remember to check the latest news here before updating your iPhone.
- You must download Cydia’s “On File” system in case Apple blocks more exploits in future updates. We will post a guide on how to do this later, but for now you can still continue following this tutorial.
- * If you have a “No WiFi” problem after following this tutorial, go to Settings – > General -> Reset and tap on Reset Network Settings. That should solve any WiFi issues you have.
- If you are using T-Mobile you must go to Settings -> General -> Network and slide the Enable 3G button to Off.
blacksn0w Tutorial
1. Download our free iUserbar toolbar
2. Click the Downloads button and click on the blackra1n RC3 link to download it.
3. Connect your iPhone to your computer and open the blackra1n application.
4. Click the make it ra1n button.
5. blackra1n will now put your iPhone in to recovery mode and display the above image of Geohot. While in recovery mode, blackra1n will jailbreak your device.
6. Once blackra1n is done jailbreaking, your iPhone will reboot and you should see the blackra1n icon on your iPhone or iPod touch screen.
7. Tap the blackra1n icon to open it. Tap on Cydia, Rock, and blacksn0w and then click the Install button to install them.
8. Once you’ve installed the applications, restart your iPhone. To do that, just hold down the top button until the Slide to power off message appears. Slide the button, and wait for your device to turn off. Turn on your device and you should now see the applications you selected on your iPhone.
What now?
Congratulations, you have successfully unlocked your iPhone, now you can use your iPhone with other carriers! If you live in the US the only other carrier you can use your iPhone with is T-Mobile. Your unlock is nt permanent, and Apple will try to push updates to block it. I’ve already jailbreak my 3gs with Blackrain( The first release ). Should I restore to factory settings before installing the Blacksnow?
If you already jailbreak your 3gs with Blackrain and kept the blackra1n.app on your iPhone, simply run it. You will see Icy icon replaced by an option “ra1n”. Install this to upgrade your app. After upgrading, run blackra1n.app again. You will see “sn0w”. Install this, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone.
What if I’ve already deleted the Blackrain icon on my phone?
If you’ve already done it, then follow the steps in this tutorial and use blackra1n to install it again. There is no need to factory restore your iPhone.
I’ve tried to reinstall it but there isn’t any Blackrain icon on my phone. What next?
I know… The same thing happened to me. What I figured out is that you have to restore your iPhone through iTunes. Remember, once you restore it, you will lose everything, but it will update back your icons and the order you had it in. Then reinstall “blackra1n”. The icon will reappear.
Just open Cydia go in Manage + Sources + Edit + ADD and
http://blackra1n.com press done and install blacksn0w reeboot and enjoy your unlock iphone.

I ran the program, but it’s not unlocking or leaving a black rain icon…what should I try doing?
If you installed blackrain before and deleted the icon you should try to unlock using blacksn0w from Cydia, just add a new source “http://blackra1n.com” and you should find “Blacksn0w” package, install it and you are done, your phone is unlocked!
Note, installing blacksn0w via cydia will not put an icon to the springboard, it will only unlock the phone.

Blackra1n works only on 3.1.2 firmware, I tried it on 3.1 it doesnt work so update to 3.1.2 directly from itunes and then run blackra1n it

Since your standing at v3.01 you can update to 3.1.2 without loosing any of your information and your apps. The only way you would lose them is with a restore or if you use PWNageTool, but since the base band of 5.11 is able to unlock that make’s PWNtool useless. So here’s what you want to do…update to 3.1.2 in iTunes…once that’s done run the blackra1n program. Your phone should then put a black rain drop on your phone, click on that to launch the program and click on cydia and blacksn0w. Once done reboot your phone. Once the phone is up and running you should be able to get you carrier. Hope that helps.

Hey Dirty Dobb, I was just about to undertake your steps above and something occurred to me that I wanted to double-check before proceeding.
From my understanding, blackra1n is all about ‘unlocking’ your phone so you can use it with other carriers. Does the process you describe above somehow effect my current ‘jail=break’ status?
I wasn’t sure if updating to 3.1.2 in iTunes removes the ‘jail break’ and then blackra1n simply ‘unlocks’ the phone?
Or does it unlock AND jail break?

The geohotz logo never appears on my freshly upgraded Apple iPhone 3G running 3.1.2. It’s frozen in Recovery mode and here are the logs below. Please help.

I have been trying unsuccessfully to jail break my iPhone 3G with OS 3.1.2, to no avail, I couldn’t get beyond Geohot photo, the phone rest and reboot with enter passcode page.

Sommer, have you found a solution? I get exactly te same results although I am using Windows 7. After Geohot, it reboots with passcode page. I got rid of the passcode and same results. I run blackra1n as an administrator. I copied it to C:\ as well, nothing changes.
MY IPHONE has been jailbroken but when i insert any sim card besides the original one .it says iphone detected another sim card connect to itunes.i tried to install the snow app again but it is not working.any help would be appreciated it
I got it to work now. I switched from using Vista Ultimate Edition (XP Compatability mode) to a Windows XP SP3 and it worked now. For those who wanted to know about timing it Step 6 (Recovery mode) should not take more than 60 seconds.

After some research, it seems like this new jb/ul works on even the new 3gs with latest iBootRom, whose 24kpwn exploit was blocked by Apple, works, except that upon reboots or power on/off the device must be tethered and blackra1n started for it to boot? Can someone please confirm?

You can jailbreak and unlock any iPhone 3GS, even the ones with the newer boot rom. The newer boot rom iPhone’s might be tethered though, which means you need to run blackra1n again each time you power off your iPhone and turn it on.

Yes, you can jailbreak your iPhone using blackra1n regardless of whether your iPhone is locked or not.

After about 60 second with that icon, my iPhone reboots into my passcode page.

You can just update from iTunes, but in the future do not do this. Come back here and check first if it is safe to update, otherwise your iPhone may be permanently locked. Apple will definitely patch this in their next update!

Today I got a 3Gs iphone from AT&T (I have a contract with AT&T) and did the update on 3Gs with iTunes only. Now it’s Version 3.1.2, Modem Firmware 05.11.07, Carrier AT&T 5.6… ( I didn’t use any Custom Restore Firmware) I Jailbreak the 3Gs with Blackra1n and installed Cydia… I did a reboot to iphone and Wala la!! It’s Done! Works fine..

Hoping someone can help. So i have an iphone 3g unlocked and jailbroken to 3.0 right now and want to update it to 3.1.2. Before i do the blackra1n to unlock do i need to first connect my iphone to itunes and just download the 3.1.2 or do i need to download and install the 3.1.2 or do i not have to do anything and just in the blackra1n app. Sorry to everyone for the questions this is the first time i am gonna try and do it myself and dont want to mess up.

I have a 3gs at 3.1. I jailbroke with blackr1n and today i installed blacksn0w, i tried it and it was fined with another sim. however, my wifi stuffed up and was’t working properly so i reset all setting and now my phone won’t even start, it’s stuck on the logo apple…

((iPhone 3G/3GS owners who found themselves stuck with version 05.11 of the baseband (either by accident or because they bought it that way) are now in luck! geohot was able to turn the already-public at+xemn crash into an injection vector, which can be used to inject his version of the unlock. The blacksn0w unlock is available for free via Cydia by adding the repository http://blackra1n.com in the Manage->Sources panel. Congratulations, geohot!
Those of you who are already unlocked at 3.1.2 because you kept your 04.26 baseband now have an extra cushion of comfort, and more choices: ultrasn0w, purplesn0w, and now blacksn0w (and of course the original yellowsn0w too if you’re still back at FW 2.x). Whether or not you choose to update your baseband solely to use the new unlock is a personal choice, but so far there are no advantages to doing so (and remember you can’t come back to 04.26 after you’ve gone to 05.11).
As with all the unlocks, it will probably very soon be re-sold through scam sites that charge you money for what is offered to the community for free. Please stay vigilant for these scam sites and steer your friends away from them.)))

Hi there. First time jailbreaker, with 3GS 16 gig, with Win Vista Home Premium SP1. I followed the steps, got stuck on the post install log for snow for about 10 mins, then rebooted. Installation completed upon reboot, but wifi isn’t available- no networks discoverable. I tried another sim (TMobile)which works however.

A Quick reminder to everbody that before you follow the blackra1n application do a fresh restore 3.1.2 firmware via Itunes before they patch it tomorrow then do the blackra1n. i tried, and tried to do same tutorials and wont work until i fully restore it to itunes.
