The Dev Team released verison 3.1.4 of their own jailbreaking software called PwnageTool. With PwnageTool, you can create a custom jailbroken IPSW file and restore it through iTunes. You can already easily jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 using blackra1n for Windows/Mac, but Pwnage Tool is required for iPhone users that want to keep their iPhone unlock. Apple has updated the modem firmware/baseband and the latest one fixes the iPhone unlock exploit. Downgrading is not possible, so iPhone users must update to iPhone 3.1.2 firmware by creating a custom firmware file and then restoring it through iTunes. PwnageTool works with the iPod touch as well. PwnageTool is only available for Mac.
WARNING
- PwnageTool is compatible with all iPhones and the iPod touch first generation and only iPod touch 2nd generation devices that were already jailbroken before. If you have an iPod touch 3rd generation, you cannot use PwnageTool.
- If you recently purchased an iPhone 3GS, the jailbreak may or may not work. I recommend you try blackra1n (1-click jailbreak) to see if you can jailbreak.

1. Connect your iPhone or iPod Touch to your PC and then open the PwnageTool application. If you don’t have iTunes then go to this link and download iTunes.
2. Select your device by clicking on it and then click the white arrow to continue.
3. PwnageTool will now attempt to find the IPSW file for your iPhone. If you haven’t downloaded it already, then download it now from here:
- iPhone 3.1.2 download (iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw, 241 MB)
- iPhone 3G 3.1.2 download (iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw, 242 MB)
- iPhone 3GS 3.1 download (iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw, 306 MB)
(Right-click and save to your PC. Do not use Safari to download this because Safari will download this as a .zip file)
4. Once PwnageTool has found your IPSW file it will show it on the screen. Click it and click the arrow to continue.
5. PwnageTool will ask you the following: “We will now create an .ipsw file that you can use to restore your iPhone 3G(S) with iTunes. This file will be placed on your desktop. Do you want to continue?” Just click on the Yes button.
6. PwnageTool will now show this message if you have an iPhone 3GS: “Do you have an iPhone 3G(S) contract that would normally activate through iTunes?” If you are using an unlocked iPhone, then click on the No button to continue. If you click Yes, then PwnageTool will create an IPSW with an updated baseband which will not be able to unlock your iPhone 3GS device on the current 05.11.07 modem firmware (baseband).
7. PwnageTool will now start the Building IPSW process. It will also ask you to enter in your password in the middle of it, just enter in the username and password for your Mac and click OK.
8. Once the Building IPSW process is complete, PwnageTool will show the following message: “Has your iPhone 3G(S) been Pwned before (does it have the pineapple logo)? If you are unsure click No.” Just click on No.
9. PwnageTool will now put your device in to recovery mode so you can restore the custom IPSW file to your device.
10. Once your device is in recovery mode, open iTunes and press option on your keyboard and at the same time click on Restore in iTunes. Select the IPSW file that has the name Custom_Restore.ipsw in it and click Choose.
11. iTunes will now restore the custom firmware to your device. Once it’s restored, you can open your device and see the Cydia and Icy app on there. That’s all there is to it!
What now?
Congratulations, you have successfully jailbroken your iPhone or iPod Touch, give yourself a pat on the back! Now you have access to a lot more applications and modifications that you will never see in the App Store. Hey guys pls do help me now . Am on firmware 2.2.1 and want to update to the latest firmware . So if in future i want to get back to 2.2.1 after upgrading to 3.1.4 or something am not sure is it possible ? And one more thing is this software available for windows or is it only for mac ? Some ppl say they’re facing some wifi issues after upgardation of firmware . So will i face a similar issue ? pls do help as am a noob in these kinda stuffs
you can just restore in itunes with the shift+restore method, and selecting the 2.2.1 firmware
got a big problem need help tried to update jailbroken iphone 3g to version 3.1.2 tried using black rain but pulled the iphone out by mistake in the middle of the sync and now the iphone wont respond to anything and is not regonised by itunes or the computer need help fast
you may want to do a hard restore by pressing the restore button on the phone itself. If that doesn’t work, take the sim card out (use the iphone tool provided) and put it back in. I recall doing the same thing and was able to restore this way.

Download firmware,
Through itunes, connect the phone in restore mode;
Browse to location where downloaded firmware is saved;
Let it do its job.

Frankly, blackrain was fast and efficient, but I have had issues with WiFi and connecting to ITunes. On the former, I learned from a similar iphone forum to reset the network settings every time you suspect you should have WiFi but don’t. Any ideas on connecting to Itunes, anyone? With Pawnage jailbrake this was never an issue.

I tried jailbreaking my new Iphone 3GS 32g with firmware 3.1.2 (05.11.07) with blackra1n.
During jailbreaking my iPhone was stuck in recovery mode. I was trying many times to restart blackra1n. And also I did try to restore with iTunes to 3.1.2 ,it’s giving me every time the same message “This device isn’t eligible for the requested build”. So i stuck I recovery mode. Can u help me please, what I shoul do?
