Geohot recently released his new jailbreaking software called blackra1n. blackra1n allows you to jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 or iPod touch with just a click of a button. Follow the guide below to learn how to use blackra1n and jailbreak your device.
WARNING
- If you want to keep your software unlock on the iPhone, you should not use blackra1n. You will need to use PwnageTool instead, which preserves your baseband and helps you update without loosing your unlock.
- blackra1n is supported on all iPhones, and iPod touches running on iPhone OS 3.1.2 firmware
except for the iPod touch 3rd generation 8 GB (model MC). What that means is that if you brought an iPod touch after September 9 and the Model # on the back has “MC“, you cannot jailbreak it with blackra1n. If you try to do that, then you will need to restore your iPod touch!Update: The latest blackra1n supports all devices, the newer iPod touch and iPhone 3GS will be tethered, meaning you will need to connect your device to your computer and run blackra1n again every time you reboot.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click either the Windows logo to download blackra1n for Windows, or click the Apple logo to download blackra1n for Mac.
blackra1n Tutorial
1. Connect your iPhone or iPod touch to your computer and open the blackra1n application.
2. Click the make it ra1n button.
3. blackra1n will now put your iPhone or iPod Touch in to recovery mode and display the above image of Geohot. While in recovery mode, blackra1n will jailbreak your device.
4. Once blackra1n is done jailbreaking, your iPhone or iPod Touch will reboot and you should see the blackra1n icon on your iPhone or iPod touch screen.
5. Tap the blackra1n icon to open it. You have the option of installing either Cydia, Icy, or Rock. Select the applications you would like to install and then click the Install button to install them.
6. Once you’ve installed the applications, restart your iPhone or iPod touch. To do that, just hold down the top button until the Slide to power off message appears. Slide the button, and wait for your device to turn off. Turn on your device and you should now see the applications you selected on your iPhone or iPod Touch.
What now?
Congratulations, you have successfully jailbroken your iPhone or iPod Touch, give yourself a pat on the back! Now you have access to a lot more applications and modifications that you will never see in the App Store. So let me get this straight. With the latest update, baseband and everything, nothing out there will jailbreak it? I’m happy to stick with AT&T for now so I don’t need it unlocked but I would love some of the apps like expose, winterboard, and a few others. I will gladly pay for a jailbreak. If there’s leagal issues (there shouldn’t be, because we bought these phones fair and square like one does a computer) then I’ll buy from Geohot an app that “puts my iPhone’s security system to the test”. With that said, I know we’d all love this exploit you found to last through apples upcomming release, but I don’t care for that update. Btw: what’s keeping you from setting up the installers like you did at iphoneos3.com/security ?
i have the update for the ipod touch so mine is now 3.1.3 and i have tried using blackra1n a couple of times now but whenever i click the ‘make it rain’ button it just sais ‘entering recovery and my ipod screen goes to a usb cable with an arrow pointing to itunes. nothing happens from here, i really need help and im getting very frustrated now! any help or suggestions ?
it is because the current black rain jailbreak is for the 3.1.2 firmware i made the same mistake updating my ipod but blackrain will soon jailbreak 3.1.3

I have iPhone 2G with 3.0 OS jailbroken with redsn0w, using T-Mobile SIM. I was able to successfully upgrade to 3.1.2 using the following procedure:
1. Update to 3.1.2 using iTunes “Update” button, the official Apple update. This RELOCKS your phone and shows just the USB iTunes graphic upon boot up! It seems bad because now your phone is useless. But don’t sweat! The next step will unlock it in seconds.
2. Run Blackra1n RC3. It literally takes 7 seconds, you see the mona lisa image on your iPhone and know it is working, it reboots your phone, and all is well!
3. That’s it! I didn’t lose ANY apps or settings, I did NOT have to Restore, or do ANYTHING else!
NOTICE I said this was for my iPhone 2G (original) jailbroken 3.0 OS upgrading to 3.1.2. Retards who don’t read the entire thing assume all risk!

i got an iphone 3gs version 3.1.2,i made it jailbroken,..but i have one iphone version 3.1.3,i make it downgrade to version 3.1.2 to jail break it using blackra1n but it wont unlock my phone,i install the blackra1n there and the cydia,but when i stall the snow to make it unlock my phone but it wont let me..help pls
won’t work for me, i get stuck with either a blank screen, or the screen showing a usb connection to the cd with itunes written under it. I’ve tried it both ways and no luck. am i going wrong somewhere?

for all you people who blackra1n isn’t working for and upgraded to 3.1.3 . go to iclarified.com type in jailbreak 3.1.3 under search and follow the instructions exactly how your told and your phone will be jailbroken and unlocked!! even if your stuck where i was at the emergency phone call only and insert proper sim with pinlock error… since itunes obviously won’t read your phone skip step 2! it will work guranteed if you do it right!!

So i tried this i dowloaded black rain and hit make it rain the ppicture did not show and when i turned my ipod back on it did not show the black rain logo so idk whats wrong with it… can someone help me?

I have 3.1.3 when i plug in my ipod touch it goes to a blank screen thats lit up but nothing on it (like a black light up) it just sits there. what should I do but it says your ipod is done wait for reboot.

apple struck me as well. i’ve ran blackra1n several times, and nothing happens after it enters recovery. since the update wiped everything out for my apps, except the few basic ones they send with it.

Ok, the text box comes up, then i say ok and the origional box says “done, waiting for reboot” and then nothing. my ipods doing nothing, neither is the computer, in relation to the jailbreak
I have the same problem where I have to make rain everytime I switch it off and all the apps that i have had remain. It is strange I just want to be able to not have to do that.
I have a ipod touch 3g, and I downgraded the firmware to 3.1.2, everytime I switch it off I see a usb sign, then I have to pull out the blackra1n software and make it rain, then all of my apps reappear.
